Erik's Journal
Date: Monday, November 22nd 2002.
Geography: The wonderful town of Gander Newfoundland.
Point form day: Woke up in Grand Falls -escorted an elderly woman for a walk to the local shopping mall -gave that very same woman a ride back from the mall -went to the YMCA and worked out -left for Gander -met the Kindness captain, (Debby Briffett Waye) and the local police chief (Oz Fudge) and rolled through town with a full police escort, lights and all! -checked into the warmest welcome we have ever had at the Hotel Gander -ate a great dinner -had one of the most bizarre staff rallies I have ever been to -were 'Screeched in'. A process involving hard bread, a cod, a giant paddle, mystery meat and Screech whiskey (or in my case root beer). After this ritual you are considered to be a true Newfoundlander -Mayor declared tomorrow Kindness Day in Gander -worked on the computer.
Highlight of the day: Being Screeched in was very funny. It was a quintessential East coast experience and I was there with all the boys. Life is good.
Oh wait... the Police escort was also pretty amazing. Usually it's the cops chasing me, not me chasing the cops. It was surreal. We had the sirens going, horn honking and we were running red lights. I couldn't believe it.
Most inspiring moment: Meeting the all the Hotel Gander staff. These are good people.
Shout outs: Debby, thanks for making all this happen. Thanks to the YMCA in Grand Falls for letting us have our first shower in four days.
Classic quote: "Now let me slow it down for the mainlanders...."- the fire inspector after rambling in 'neufenese' for a few lines.
My crux: Maintaining a positive attitude and receiving critical feedback without challenging others.
Physically speaking: Fantastic after the YMCA. It's amazing what a little exercise and a shower will do for your attitude.
Mental stimulation: Driving.
Big laughs: Hearing Kelly go off. I love him. He makes me laugh on a daily basis. Treehorn me too.
When I finished writing this I was: Listening to Kelly sing and play the guitar.
