Erik's Journal

Date: October 7th 2002.

Geography: THE CANADIAN SHEILD, en route to Sault St Marie. We were interviewed by the CBC this morning and began our trip with another stop at the Terry Fox memorial. How could I not begin thinking about being Canadian? For the last several hours have been weaving in and out of rock with sporatic views of Lake Superior. It is strange to actually be here. I have conceptualized what this lake must actually look like ever since I was 5. My Dad would read me 'Paddle to the Sea', a book about a carved toy kayaker that made the journey through all the Great lakes to the Atlantic. Now 20 years later here I am gazing on and hopefully dipping into that very same 'wolf' of a lake. This trip is such a pure link to everything that I grew up with. It's refreshing because not only am I growing but my conception and love of this country is evolving. I touch what I have only imagined. With that connection my past, present and future link and expand. I am constantly connecting to the people and the places I have heard about through CBC ever since I was born. At the same time I can see the unbounded potential Canada has. There is so much room for learning and growth here, it heartens me and fuels such a strong fire in my heart that I can hardly contain my joy.

Point form day: Checked out -had a radio interview with a local station -went for breakfast at Hoito and had the pancakes -were interviewed by CBC - left Thunder Bay and stopped the Terry Fox Memorial again -hit the first snow of the trip -stopped for lunch in Marathon -

Highlight of the day: Our interview with CBC. She asked some good questions. Plus, I just love the CBC.

Most inspiring moment: Team wise, I know this sounds small but it was nice to see how quickly we mobilized this morning.

Shout outs: Ted, Jan and Jody. Our hearts are with you. The strength of your family is inspiring. Kelly, thanks for taking care of yourself. We really appreciate you being with us.

Classic Quote:

My Crux: The RV is dirty. That drives me nuts. Crackers.

Physically Speaking: I am in some serious need of some yoga. I weighed myself at the Hoito the Finnish Pancake house this morning and Erik Hanson is weighing in at a hefty 186lbs. The smashed fingernail from roofing I have looks a little like a face. Bizarre no? I need a haircut. All this taken into account, I feel like I am in better shape than I was when I was in Victoria.

Mental Stimulation: My mind feels clear and strong.

Big Laughs: Sporadic, spontaneous bursts of joy throughout the day. Also our picnic in Marathon overlooking Lake Superior. We proposed multiple 'better of 2 evil' and 'better of two good' situations. We ended up discussing which one of our friends would be best suited to date our ex-girlfriends.

When I finished writing this I was: In Canada.
