Extreme Kindness

High on Kindness!

Adventure abounds! Manalive am I ever stoked!

Recently Chris, myself, Mark Lutterll and our friends Frank and Jessica, spent a couple of days summating Mt’ Adams a 12,281 ft peak in Washington State located about 30 km away from the smoldering Mt. St Helens. The weather was perfect, the mountain was beautiful and the people we met were incredible. From the park rangers, to the recipients of our congratulatory high 5’s everyone was exceptionally friendly and helpful.

At one point in our early morning ascent, I paused to grab a picture of the deep orange sunrise exploding around me creating a shadow of the mountain to the west. With clumsy, cold fingers I dropped my new camera case and it went skidding down the hill to oblivion…. or so I thought. Apparently a local climber with two super dogs spotted my case skipping down the glacier and sent one of his hounds to fetch it. When we both arrived at the top he returned my case with a smile and a handshake. Really, it was just awesome! It’s people like these who get me excited about the future of the world.

My challenge this week is to try a random act of kindness while doing some physical activity!

Whether that’s saying “Good morning!” to everyone on your day break run or piggybacking an old lady across the street, just make it happen, and have some fun with the journey!

Enjoy the video. Let me know what you think!

There’s something about the wilderness, being outdoors … participating in nature I guess … that is awesome.

I love backpacking. Just the thought of loading my pack and taking off for a trip – no matter how long or short – makes me smile. When I am hiking the backcountry I feel at once so solitary and capable of clear, uninterrupted thought and yet so connected to life and lives. Stop and listen to the sounds of life around you when you are on the trail. Enjoy the sense of serenity that slowly descends over you.

Meeting someone on the trail is somehow different than meeting someone on the street in a city. You are both experiencing this sense of peace, both pushing yourselves physically to “conquer” the challenge … on a trail you feel equal with everyone you meet. Thoughts of differences never occur to you, concerns over whether or not this person will reject you never cross your mind, and you are less self-conscious with your pack on your back, your pole in your hand, and the knowledge that you have already conquered part of the trail.

If only this sense of equality could be brought to the cities and ‘every day’ life. What a difference it would make, seeing everyone as an equal and someone you are connected to by that life force you felt fleetingly on the trail! Wouldn’t life be grand?

Taking kindness to another level – animals.

Erik you defiantly practice what you preach. Reading your message I was reminded of the time I was walking down Cook Street we spotted each other and off your board you got and handed me a hug. Thank you for always being ready for each moment of kindness that presents itself. Clap, clap, clap.

I just did my physical kindness for the day, thanks for the inspiration. I gave my guy a neck massage and kisses. (He’s writing – well, he was, now he’s all relaxed and has a smile on his face). I think it felt better to put that smile on his face than it did for him to receive the massage.

Jen I liked your comment about serenity slowly descending on you in nature. It’s like it wraps you in peace, a very good thing.

    Cheers
